I want to update the driver for the wireless card on a laptop-

How do I find out the make and model of the card without opening the laptop up?
and is there any other info I'll need to know?

If it's XP, right click on the My Computer icon & choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab & click on Device Manager. You'll find your wireles card under Network adapters.

Or look in Control Panel - Network Connections - right Click Wireless network Connection - Properties & it'll be under the tab General - in th Connect Using Box.

If you've got Vista, I'm not sure offhand, but I'll have a look on my Vista laptop tonight if no-one else has come along first.
