Wireless Help-Laptop recognises shows Wireless Internet but can't connect to it

I'm entering the correct WEP key and when I tell it to repair, it still doesn't work - any ideas what I can do next?

is it down? re boot and start again?

nope, doesn't work - the laptop was working really slowly and was basically rebuilt from scratch-software wise, this is now the only thing not working correctly - it apparently works with the cable, altho I haven't tried it.

have you downloaded the latest Windows update? If so, that could be causing problems with your firewall - i'm currently refusing to install it (after losing internet for most of yesterday) until Zonealarm relaease a patch/update.

hmm, not sure, as was it guy in dhs work who actually worked on the laptop and now can't fix this final part

when was the windows update released?
I know I got an update thingy yesterday on my pc, but didn't install as have had probs in the past-was it just released yesterday?

ahem no help then i'm afraid - when I had this prob I rang AOL. (I did something or other when trying to link to mums BB, and as a result mine wouldn't work) anyhow, the bloke talked me thru changing from WEP security to a differnt security option (I have 4) some of the other settings were wrong as well (can't remember which ones thou) the man was very helpful.

you've tried it with the cable?

can you remove the connection completely and go thru setting it up again?

What's your phone line like? Our wireless worked fine for over a year then the phone line started playing up, lots of noise, etc, and that affected the wireless. It kept going down and we ended up having to have the phone line replaced.

One laptop we had problems connecting seemed to have issues with a particular security level. In the end we set the router down one level and the laptop connected fine to it then. We then had to change the other computers to match it, but it was worth it.

I can't recall the exact names of the security levels, but there were at least 5 and putting it down one level didn't seem a major risk.

no easy fix then? Just as I thought, wireless can be such a pain, can't it? I'll try removing it and starting again from scratch, thanks everyone.

mummydoit, my pc links perfectly to it,as does dh's laptop, so don't think it can be the phone line, def something to do with the laptop itself

It might be worth checking the channel the router is working on - some computers have fewer channels available than some computers - on your computer you can check by right clicking on the My Computer icon & choose Properties. Choose the Hardware tab & click on Device Manager. You'll find your wireles card under Network adapters, right click again & choose Properties & the channel should be shown on the Advanced tab.
For your router, it may depend on the make, but it will probably involve putting its IP addresss into your browser on a computer that is connected - have a look at your documentation.

alexgrin - How on earth did you manage to dredge up this 10 year old thread? Was it just to plug that link? I think we can assume that the OP has a different computer now; nevermind whether or not they solved their original wireless issue.
