How do I play Nintendo DS Cars Mater-national????

bought for DS for his 5th birthday and it's impossible! I was trying to show DS how to play but I can't seem to stay on the track at all. I've never done a racing game before - what am I doing wrong?????

ds says use the + control, take it slowly to begin with or you go out of control !

thanks, maybe i?m just going too fast. then again, maybe I'll just wait for DH to get home.
