HD DVD discs - can you play them on normal dvd player?

Obviously appreciate you won't get the HD quality, but will they still play?

Not normally, but I have heard some HD DVDs are 'hybrid' disks which also contain another version which can be played back.
That's news to me and I don't see how that works, but presumably it will say on the disk.

Some people have HD DVD players on a game console.
