Before I start this post; please be advised I am absolutely hopeless at anything I.T./computer related so I would appreciate very simple replies.

A few weeks' ago I asked for advice on getting Microsoft Word, and several people kindly replied and suggested Open Office.

So, I googled it and came up with (I think) their genuine website. I have tried to download/install it. My system (Windows Vista) keeps giving me warnings and asking me to keep confirming that I definitely want this programme, and I know where it comes from and that it is safe etc etc.

(not in those exact words but I hope someone understands my gist). So I got a bit panicky and cancelled it, I am worried about getting some dodgy virus.

Would anyone be able to advise me further? How do I know for definite that a website that comes up when I google is definitely ok?

Thanks

Their website is www.OpenOffice.org, so if you downloaded it from there you should be fine. I've not long changed to Windows Vista myself and it keeps on asking "Are you sure?" and "Did you really want to do this?" all the time, so I don't think it's telling you about any real problems. I assume you have some virus software installed - keep an eye out for any messages from that, just in case, but otherwise don't worry about all the Vista messages.

I use OPenOffice and it is great. Not much diff between it and MS office - but one thing that does my head in is making sure you save any documents you are to email to others in MS Word/Excel/Powerpoint etc type files, otherwise they won't be able to open them, and occasionally some of the formatting changes.

Thank you both. I am going to go to that website now. Thanks also for the reassurance re Vista.

Tbh I was on the BT helpline recently and the adviser was going through some stuff with me and she commented that Vista has quite high security.

Yes I do have virus software, but thanks for checking. Much appreciated.
