I am just going round in circles with the MS help tools. I type in my email address, and it always asks me to reset my password, send a code to my mobe etc. I've done that at least three times in the last half-hour! But then I get to site like this

login.microsoftonline.com

and it shows an old work account from years ago (which I'd like to delete). It seems whilst this is here, I can't access my hotmail account. I've had the account for many years, and used it just days ago. It's like this old account is blocking it. On this microsoftonline.com page, there's an icon for Edit and Remove. First I tried Edit. It highlights the Username field, so I replaced that old email addy with my hotmail one. But that takes me back to the basic log-in page, and the old email address is still there, and if I change it again to the hotmail account, it asks me to reset my password, and I'm back going round the loop again! I also thought I saw it say, the account is blocked cos of too many incorrect log-in attempts. Accessing more detailed help from MS seems to require a log-in, and of course I haven't currently got one! If I try the Remove option, a warning box flashes up saying, "do you to remove this password? This cannot be undone". So I backed off. I don't want to delete a password, I want to delete the old email account altogether. As so often, I don't know why this is suddenly a problem now.

Thanks for reading if you've got this far!

I had something like that, very frustrating, nothing worked. I left it a few days and tried again and just logged in straight away. No idea what was going on. But I've since moved most stuff to a new outlook account as I don't trust it now.

I thought Hotmail stopped being supported ages ago

My parents switched to Gmail because of it

I think, if you already hooked it up to Outlook, then you can get into it, but otherwise I don't think you can.

The one thing saving it from being a complete disaster is that I have a Googlemail account, which I never use, but it seems all my emails are copied there, so I should be able to see them. I'll try in a day or two and see if it sorts itself out, as @SunnieShine says.

Try accessing it in incognito mode.

This happened to me and eventually I accessed it but I took a while due to security. If I was to do this again I would ask AI for step by step instructions.

Try from a different browser or in incognito mode.

I will try again on Chrome (I'm on Firefox now), but at least I've recovered access to the email successfully on my phone now. I think I'll forget about it for a couple of days on the laptop now! Thanks again for the suggestions.

Mine works perfectly, they don’t make new ones but old ones should all work

Try resetting password on a laptop and scan your phone for viruses, delete dodgy apps.

Problem solved! I think! Restarted my laptop with some updates (thought that might help!) this morning, and at least when I went into Outlook, my real email address was there, not the old work one. So it offered a QR code. Now I've never had any success with QR codes myself. My DS finds them straightforward, but I find I point my camera, and nothing much happens. Did some Googling, and it says not all phones support QR codes, but you can download a reader (on your mobe) like Google Lens. Which I did. Which worked, I tihnk, and then my mobe still wanted a fingerprint too. But I'm in and staying logged in!

This was/is the case. I've been using the Hotmail addy in Outlook for years now with no probs.
