How do I edit a song to use for a powerpoint presentation?

It's driving me BONKERS. have been trying for hours now.

I want to use a song as a soundtrack to my presentation and it needs editing. SURELY there must be some free programme that will let me??!!

Have tried to download the Freecorder toolbar but it won't record for me . Any other ways of doing it?? pleeeeeeeeeeeease?
