Can someone please come and give me an idiot guide to photo printing? please?

Trying to print photos I have downloaded form my digital camera, I have 4x6" with tab photo cards, but depending on what settings I choose its either too big for the card or far too small. Where am I going wrong?

i'm rubbish at it and copy and paste them into word and make them bigger or smaller that way

ah ha, I may have to resort to that, its driving me mad, though, I must be doing something very basic wrong. I used to be pretty good at these sort of things, too!

ok, even thats not working.

I copied it into word
I right clicked on the image and clicked on format picture and then on Size and entered the sizes if the paper I'm printing to, ie 10cm by 15cm (4"x6").
I then clicked on File Page setup and changed the paper size to 4"x6" photo with tab and the image then appears to be too big for the screen.

what the heck am I doing wrong.
