Mac user problems with hotmail through safari and Firefox

I've an old style hotmail account and had problems opening it with safari after microsoft updated it (hotmail) last year. I then downloaded Firefox and have been using it to access my hotmail account ever since but still use safari for other internet stuff. For some reason Firefox won't open at all anymore and Safari won't open hotmail... it goes into a mad loop ... As you can tell I'm not very teccy but suggested solutions in non-geek-speak would be most welcome!

Hmmm, sounds like you need to speak to a professional.

I have a mac (they are great!!). I use firefox as I was told that it is far superior to Safari.

I know what you mean, hotmail (ie Microsoft, ie PCs!!) does seem to have a lot of issues with macs. My type used to display strangely, and also couldnt use the bold, italcs features etc.

To be honest, I cant remember how I sorted it - oh yes, got a new laptop mac to replace my old one and problem was ok on new machine.

I would call your nearest apple store and book an appointment with an Apple Genious (yes, really!). You can take your computer in, like a clinic, and they will look at your problem and fix it.

I would say this was your best option as phone help is useless in my experience.

Are you near a city? Could you enlist a big strong helper to carry the mac in a box, and drive to an apple store? I know there is one in Glasgow and also London...

Sorry cant give you any direct techi help myself.

I had exactly this problem and emailed Microsoft for a solution. The only way round it is to periodically delete your cookies.
I wouldn't advise deleting all your cookies but you can select the Hotmail/MSN-related ones and delete those. It should work after that. I have to do mine maybe once a week.

To delete your cookies go to the Safari drop-down menu, select preferences and click on 'show cookies'. Then just scroll through and delete any that are related to hotmail or msn.

Thanks everyone... problem is Firefox now not working at all... I can't even quit it.... which means I can't shut down the computer... Any ideas anyone?

But I think in general the reason hotmail is slower in the evenings is because it's when the US wakes up and they all log on!

I live in Ireland so no Mac store!

To force quit go to the finder menu, apple menu, then force quit.

I don't use safari or firefox, but have used wyzo successfully with hotmail. I have a mac pro lap top.

DH (resident mac expert in our house) has downloaded some sort of whizzy software that will allow our mac to think it is a PC. Or something. Anyway, it allows us to use the IKEA kitchen planner even though it says you can't with a mac.

that's cool...thanks so much! I didn't know about "force quit" facility... fab!
