AVG - no longer free from 31st May?

Sorry if this has been done recently - please point me in the right direction if it has.

I have the free version of AVG (7.5??) I keep getting pop ups saying that from 31st May it will no longer be available but I can upgrade to 8.0 and this seems to cost £39.99.

Can anyone advise please? Is there another (preferably free) alternative.

N.B. I am Ms Hopeless when it comes to IT so please answer in very short words or I will just get v confused.

I am up to version 9 of the free version - it always offers you the Upgrade (which costs money) but has always had the free version available too, ime.
