Pornographic photos have started appearing on Facebook?

Tbh I didn’t know whether to start this thread in chat, AIBU, feminism or geeky stuff, but reckoned I would probably get the most practical help here!

Is anyone else experiencing this?

It’s not on my main feed but on the thumbnail squares that run horizontally across the top of the page? I’m sorry I don’t know the correct terminology for this, but it scrolls left to right as opposed to the main page below which scrolls up and down.

The photo square in question is named as coming from Joes Garden.

I realise that Zuckerberg has recently removed filters.

I do not want to click on the photo.

But nor do I think it’s acceptable to be confronted with porn every time I click on my Facebook page to look at content from my hobby groups and posts from my extended family.

What do I do please?

Think you may be talking about the stories bar at the top. If you are in the app on a phone, you can press and hold one of the stories to bring up options, one of which is “mute this story” which will stop it coming up each time.

if it’s an ad, there should be an option (either by pressing and holding or using 3 dots at the top of the ad) to “hide ad”

edited to say neither of these options mean you view the story/ad

I've reported your post so MNHq see it. May be part of the bigger problem

Thank you very much for this advice. It’s much appreciated.

Yes it is in the stories I think.

Are you sure it’s safe to press on that particular story in order to mute it? I am reluctant to do so! Because it will presumably mean that the thumbnail fills my whole screen?

Also, I don’t really want to click on any website that may be unsafe?

Is there no other way?

It’s the only way I can remove any content, ad or not from my stories feed, in the same way that I’d need to scroll to a post from a friend or an ad on my main feed, click the 3 dots and mute or remove that.

If you’re on a phone I don’t mean clicking (tapping) on it once to view it though, I mean pressing and holding it to show the additional options, which does not seem to activate viewing the story and does not fill the whole screen. When I press and hold I get a bar that comes across the bottom of the phone screen that lets me choose what I’d like to do, without viewing (putting the item up to full screen and playing the content).

Think the OP is referring to Facebook as a whole rather than MN with ads at the top of the page

I would have a good look at your privacy and security settings on Facebook. I'm also wondering who else may be using the device you use to look at Facebook - is it possible they're looking at porn and that's why it's coming up?

I only get stories from accounts I actively like or am friends with. I only get ads from things I've searched - or more spookily discussed.

OK, thank you very much for taking the trouble to explain, I understand now.

My phone is quite old so I might try and access it from a device with a more “responsive” screen.

But first … a strong coffee.

In the old days, one could report anything untoward to Facebook. But now it’s like they don’t care! I think it’s the end of the site if they allow this sort of stuff through regularly tbh.

Eek this is worrying. Thank you.

I’m as sure as I can be that no one in my household is using porn. I do live on a street of terraced houses though if that makes any difference.

I will revisit my security settings. I was certain that I had them tied down pretty securely.

Edited to say: I have two devices through which I look at Facebook and only I access both of them. And I don’t look at porn.

It’s awful isn’t it? I fear it’s the shape of things to come with Trump, Zuckerberg, Musk in charge.

Misogyny is being given a free pass!

Just out of curiosity I went onto my FB stories and although not porn there's certainly questionable pictures which I've not come across before!

My ads are usually beds, sofas etc

NormalAuntFanny · 07/02/2025 16:54

Just stop using facebook, all the other facebook apps and twitter too. You are effectively supporting them every time you log on.

It's the only way to express your disapproval because they don't give a shit about your feelings as long as you still use their services.
