Help with pc sound problems please

I bought a new monitor and speakers for my pc and at first they were working perfectly but for some reason the speakers on the monitor have stopped working and the other speakers only seem to play a few sounds. For example on games it they will only play a few sound effects not the whole thing iykwim. There is no start up noise or shut down noise, there is no sound when I receive an email, yet when I play music from 'my music' it is fine. The culprit I suspect is my DS who insists he is a computer expert and likes to go into the system and change thing to the way he likes. [also a slightly angry and miffed emoticon would fit quite well here]

I am very confused, does anyone know what he has done and how to rectify it?

Mmmmmmm, not to worry I think I have sorted it. I went in to control panel and sound effect manager and it was set to 'none' I've changed it now and it seems to be working.

Typical isn't it, you struggle for days and days to sort out this kind of problem and as soon as you start thread... lol.

Actually, scrap that last post, now I have all of the sounds I want but when I play music through the media player it sounds awful!

Lynyrd Skynyrd are singing Sweet Home Alabama to me through a baked bean tin!

I have messed around and tried out all of the different sound effects and if I have the sound I want to play music I lose all of the other sounds (including internet sound).

The only suggestion I can make is that you may have two sound things in control panel. The one you're describing sounds like one I have with 'environment' options for concert hall etc. I have that set to none. I'd look through the options on there for things like 'default' or 'reset' settings to put it back to standard.

There is also 'sounds and audio devices' in the control panel and a couple of things that could be altered on there.

Default playback device perhaps.
