I notice there's lots of sites which claim you can create your own website in 3 easy steps!! Do they actually work?

Will it look a mess?

It's not for business so I suppose it doesn't have to be too professional looking. Though I would like to add a simple forum to it.

Any ideas?

Last time I saw those instant websites they were pretty good and they have probably improved since then.
The downside is that since you'll be picking choices from a menu you are a bit limited.

It's much better to make your own, but it takes a long time to get started and at first you don't know what you want to do anyway. One of those places will do to experiment and get it up and running right away. later on you can alter the pages they gave you or add your own 'hand made' ones and link to them.

They will probably have an option to install a basic forum. Again you have to start somewhere so go for it. Having your own website is fun

You can get free ones which are pretty simple to set up- or so ive heard. They can look ok, but are based on templates, so it depends if you like your template or not.
You can get a free forum too, but beware, there's nothing more sad than an unused forum!

Well there are many worse things but you know what I mean

thanks all, so it's probably worth a try right? And I just have to buy a domain name and pay a tiddley monthly fee? Have been playing around on the net but am staggered by how much I don't understand!

and I can change the pages they gave me later...?

Yeah well...maybe not a forum...just that I thought I'd rather have something interactive if you know what I mean ..rather than just a simple guest book.

on wordpress you can set up an easy page - people can leave comments and you can chose the 'skin' from lots of different options - have a play about its a piece of piss - for the most part.

if you take a look at other poeples blogs - some use it as a simple business page. as your web adress becomes.
