Very dull query about the light on my shuffle...

I'm sure it used to always show up, either green or orange.
Yesterday I charged it, came to use it today, and there was no light. Switched it on and off a few times, then green light appeared. But it only stays on a few seconds. Music plays fine, as far as I can tell so far.
Am I going mad, or did it always show constantly before???

I think it normally shows constantly... will turn it on and look, hang on
