What strength zoom lens would be decent for Nikon digital SLR camera??

We have the basic one that came with it but it doesn't zoom very far AT ALL. We want to buy another lens that it good for general purpose with a decent zoom on it so we don't have to keep chopping and changing the lens back and forth. Can anyone help????

I've got a 55-200 for mine which is fine for zoom but doesn't go wide enough at the bottom end.. ..there's the 18-200 which I've been looking at as an all round lens..

oh, and for a bargain portrait lens (for endless children photos..) the f1.8/50mm
