I am really struggling.
Last Thurs it seemed to go all funny, couldn't get online etc. anyway the ISP did some diagnostics and said they'd been fixing something and it was better after that, I am online obviously.
But it keeps falling off, especially when the phone is being used, anything really, when I use the toaster it disconnects from the internet, you name it really.
I can't book couriers online, sign into Tesco, buy lottery tickets, upload photos, send email AT ALL, it just is all up the creek

ISP now saying it must be my phone or a firewall issue, well I have Comodo firewall pro, and can't find anything wrong with it except that it said it found mcafee firewall installed (not on list of programs, I never installed it anyway) which is incompatible.
I am totally confused and can't even find a way to disable comodo for a test run. It's doing my nut

Please can anyone suggest anything? I really need to sort out loads online this week and I can't manage without email

Thanks if you can help.

Oh and when I write a longish post here, it won't post it at all, I have to cut it in half and C&P the second half into another post.

weirdy weirdy weird.

Is it the router disconnecting from the internet or a wireless laptop disconnecting from the router?

If it's a wireless laptop you could try plugging it into the router for now.

Assuming it's actually the router disconnecting can you try unplugging all the phones and just plug the router into the main BT socket (mostly in the hall)
That would rule out a lot of things like phone extensions.handsets

Another test (to see if it's your phone line) is to unplug everything and just plug one standard (not wireless) phone into the main BT socket. Then dial 17070, select the option for "quiet line test' and see if the line is noisy or silent.

Thanks Grey, it's a desktop PC, the router is a BT voyager. The internet light goes off and I have to go to the configuration page and reconnect the bugger.
It seemed Ok this time, was just on the phone and I'm still connected - but I have just disconnected the phone line from the master socket and reconnected it into the filter instead. Maybe that helps though god knows why after all this time hardwired into the master!

Why would the phone be suddenly a problem like that?

I still can't post longs posts etc though.

I doubt it's either comodo or mcafee in this case, though that needs looking into. Have you looked in Control Panel - Add Remove programs for mcaffee?

To shut down Comodo Firewall if you do want to try it.

To completely shut the program down, right-click on the Comodo Firewall and select 'Exit'. If you choose to
exit, you will see a dialogue box confirming whether you want to exit or not.

flight · 06/04/2008 15:21

Thanks - can I get it back on again afterwards? They said it might just be port 25 blocked but it looks to be there and on the list. That is the outgoing email port apparently. I still can't send email, just tried

I checked add and remove, nothing under mcafee at all! Oh dear.

Hmm all phones (and things like sky boxes that ring home) must plug into a filter. I'm surprised it worked at all, but am not sure precisely how that works.

flight · 06/04/2008 15:24

Ah. Just sent an email while comodo was disabled. Tat must be it. Hw do I sort out that then?

OP posts:
Greyriverside · 06/04/2008 15:24

if you exit Comodo that way then restarting the PC would get it back so no problem. However I doubt that's the cause anyway since it whould be all or nothing - not erratic.

I think the phones are going to be the main cause. Do you have anything else that plugs into phone lines? alarm system etc?

flight · 06/04/2008 15:26

No, nothing. I switched off comodo by opening it (the icon wasn't available at the bottom of the screen, for some reason) through all programs, then disabling it that way. Now it won't come back! Might try a reboot...

If Comodo is interfering with email it might be as simple as ticking a box to allow Outlook express (or whatever client you use) to connect to the net.

I don't know where it would be exactly, but
Look for a list of applications in Comodo.

flight · 06/04/2008 15:30

Many thanks, I am so grateful for your help...you clever person!!

I have randomly ticked a few boxes that comodo sent, you know, the updates etc recently and maybe something went wrong there.

I will look into it - that seems to have been the issue at least partly though.

Is there anpother firewall that is perhaps an easier interface? Or is comodo a good'un?

OP posts:
Greyriverside · 06/04/2008 15:32

Ok in commodo it's the Application Monitor section you want to see

Greyriverside · 06/04/2008 15:34

Well I use the free version of Sygate, but it's quite old now and I have heard good things about Comodo. The only reason I haven't changed to it myself is laziness since I am used to mine.

I'd try things out a bit and see what still goes wrong now. What symptoms remain and then go from there.

flight · 06/04/2008 16:51

Thankyou - have uninstalled Comodo and reinstalled it. I am not sure when it's supposed to show up on add/remove or all programs, it is not as yet
It is currently scanning for malware.

However when I was downloading it, it told me it had found an incompatible program installed - McAfee personal firewall, like before - but there's nothing on the system under that name, I am mystified as to how it got there if it did, and how to get rid of it as I presueme it affects the efficacy of Comodo?

Any thoughts?

I will go into Application Monitor when I can find a way of accessing the interface

OP posts:
flight · 06/04/2008 17:17

I have opened the diagnostic report, which says this:

COMODO Firewall Pro
Version: 3.0.21.329
Operating System: 5.1.2600 Service Pack: 2.0 Processor: 32 bit

List of incompatible software present in system:
McAfee Personal Firewall Plus 7.1.113

I just don't know what to do as I can't locate the mcAfee anywhere. Have searched hidden files and so on.

I'm not sure if Comodo will still work properly?

OP posts:
flight · 06/04/2008 19:09

Oh we are Ok now.
Thanks again, just wanted to let you know I've found and removed the mcafee, goodness knows how it got there!
Bless you for being there earlier. You were brilliantly helpful.

OP posts:
Greyriverside · 06/04/2008 20:04

well that's good news. I just popped back to see how it was going.

Do post if any more problems with that. The internet should be as straightforward as telephones, but it rarely is.
