Laptop can't be turned on

Checked my emails on it about Thursday evening and it turned off (for no obvious reason).
Can't get it turned on now.

What can I try?

Unplug itm take the power cable off, remove the battery and leave it for about 30 seconds.

Put battery back in, reconnect and (hopefully) it should come back on. MIne does this every now and then.

is it perhaps the display? My last laptop did this, the monitor light went and though it could be switched on, I couldn't see anything, so it was knack all use. Just read about your missing essay elsewhere - my fingers are crossed for you!

if that doesn't work, then it's probably that the battery is dead. you need to take to a computer shop to test (or find a friend with a similar laptop)

Peasholme - you should be able to use your laptop with an external monitor. The inverter chip may need to be reseated or replaced to get it all working again.

Jofeb,

Remove the battery and see if it works directly from the mains.

Try taking battery out, hold the 'on' button for 30 seconds, put back together and turn on. When my PC did that, I rung the company and they told me to do that and it worked. Same with my laptop, but my laptop soon stopped even being fixed by that so am getting someone to look at it.

Thanks for all the responses. None of them worked though

Got my essay on there!

Thanks science teacher, but I used it as an excuse to buy a shiny new one!

SenoraPostrophe · 06/04/2008 14:39

did you take it to a shop?

Could also be the CMOS battery. This is responsible for starting the computer in the first place. If that battery, which is different to the one that you charge up every now and then, then the laptop will not start.
This battery is about the size of a 50 Euro- cent piece and is about the same price to replace. On my daghter´s IBM laptop it was under the chargeable battery, and when I replaced it, it all worked again.
......admittedly enough, by the time this occurred to me, I had bought a new laptop.
