Hello. My browser isn't working properly - I can get the first tab to work but the rest of the tabs won't work and freeze if I try to use them. My back button isn't working. I can change pages on mumsnet for instance but if I try to navigate away via a link it freezes and I have to shut down and start again.

Firefox.

Just reading the title of the thread, I was coming on here to say Firefox. I guess I'm 3rd in line.

Another vote for Firefox

anorak · 06/04/2008 23:53

Right I am going to try and install firefox on it tomorrow. I am just wondering if I will be able to connect to the internet long enough to install it!

(I am on a different computer atm)

Good luck

How do you install firefox?

Do you need to uninstall anything else first?

How compatible is it with security downloads and so on?

Fwiw Anorak, I occasionally get these issues with IE but sometimes find it's to do with my firewall or something.

flight · 07/04/2008 04:13

Oh and if you are disconnetcing frequently, have you any phones connected without filters?
I was offline all weekend pretty much, and when I unwired my phone from the master socket and plugged it back in via a filter, it magically worked again...was getting cut off every few minutes before and nothing worked, nearly took a mallet to the thing

UnderRated · 07/04/2008 04:24

Sometimes unplugging everything seems to help.

I don't think you need to uninstall anything to download firefox. If you go to their website, it should tell you what you need to do. It must be fairly straight forward because I managed it.

Firefox

flight · 07/04/2008 12:30

thanks Underrated

flight · 07/04/2008 12:45

Why is it meant to be really good by the way?

Greyriverside · 07/04/2008 13:36

There are pros and cons.

Firefox was designed to follow all the rules of HTML properly whereas IE was a mess of bodges and patches. So if every website is written properly then Firefox ought to be more reliable. It was also meant to be more secure.

However. I keep seeing people complaining that Firefox uses 100% CPU time. Also since most of the internet was designed to suit IE you will find there are things you just can't do without reverting to IE.

Anorak, by all means use it, but you still need to fix IE really.

Can the latest IE be uninstalled and reinstalled? I gather this is IE7 which I don't have.

Greyriverside · 07/04/2008 13:41

I just checked and I gather you can uninstall IE7.

First though you can try running it without AddOns

Go to Start - All Programs - System Tools
Click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)

See if that helps.

Uninstalling

Go to Start - Control Panel 0 Add/Remove programs.
Scroll the list to find Windows Internet Explorer 7
Right click and select Remove
Follow the onscreen instructions
Windows Internet Explorer 6 will now appear

flight · 07/04/2008 15:01

Oh I see. Thanks for explaining.
I tried it for a few minutes earlier, and didn't like the format, the font was really odd (you know when there are a lot of white gaps in the letters, so you have to squint? or maybe it's just me)
Anyway I uninstalled it and am back to IE...I am so chuffed at being able to use the internet again after that debacle yesterday, that IE is my best buddy at the moment

How are you getting on Anorak?

anorak · 07/04/2008 15:45

Yes I installed firefox ok. It was fairly simple to do. I left IE as it is for now. Will be getting some support from my friend who knows all about computers soon, and hopefully he will get IE sorted for me.

Thanks everyone.

Glad it is working, Anorak.

I have IE still installed so I can always use that if there were a problem with Firefox. I've never needed to do that in 2 years but it is good to have, just in case.
