Firefox 2 and 3 (beta) are using 100% CPU

Any idea how to stop this happening? The CPU goes to 100% pretty quickly, and it's not due to having too many windows/tabs open.

I have this too... best I can manage is killing off the process in the task manager, then restarting firefox.

It'll usually try and reopen all the windows i was on when I killed it, but it's a complete pain. Not sure why it happens.

Thanks Kevlar. If I did that, I'd be closing/opening Firefox every 30 secs though.

Please don't tell me I have to keep using IE!!

I had this problem quite a bit and couldn't work out what was using all the resources. I think it is all the flash adverts that are on most websites that affect it. I downloaded the add in for firefox called adblock. After you restart firefox it appears under the tools menu and it can show you all the blockable elements on the current page. When you create a fliter make sure you don't block the specific ad, but the url for the ad site.

I found if DW and I were both logged in and both had a number of pages open then firefox would go mad with the CPU. Since downloading adblock and applying it to a couple of our more used sites this has improvoed things no end and we haven't had any problems since.

Did you set it as you go to pages? e.g. can you see ads on this site? It doesn't automatically block ads, you have to configure it as you go on a per site basis. This site was the one that was hogging all of our resources. since I blocked the banner ads and the side ad we haven't had the problem

Ahhhh.... I'd got to the stage of using Ctrl-Shift-F to block the ads, just hadn't twigged that you could block them completely by right-clicking on the blocked bit...

...and suddenly I no longer have to worry about my eyes being molested by processor-hogging adverts... ahhhhhhhhhhh....
