Techy question - can I set up a new Apple ID easily?

I posted this in chat too, but thought I might get some techy help here?

For reasons that I have never quite fathomed, DH and I plus one of the DC ended up on the same Apple ID.

This is now getting annoying, especially when DH randomly decides to change the password because he couldn’t remember the last massively complicated one he set up.

Can I easily create a new Apple ID for myself (I only have an iPhone)? I don’t have any cards linked and don’t have any purchases on the existing shared one, just a few freemium type games that I only ever play for free.

I found this Apple support page - is this the one to follow?

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/108647#:~:text=You%20can%20create%20a%20new,later%20in%20the%20App%20Store.

Will it mess up my existing apps?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Your are correct sharing a Apple ID will lead to a world of pain!

A) Review existing situation

  1. Log into iCloud.com with a web browser using the existing credentials ideally on a computer.
  2. Check the Photos/ documents and Contacts etc are as you expect.

B) Create a new apple ID

  1. Ideally on a computer, create a new Apple ID using your personal email address (assuming you haven't created an Apple ID with that email address already)
  2. On the iPhone, log out of the existing Apple ID as identified on step A. I think it will offer to "keep a copy of the existing data on this phone" or similar. If you want to keep the existing data say yes, or no if you want to start from fresh. (you can always get the data from the existing account)
C) Login to the new account
  1. On the iPhone, log in to the new account
  2. Check that your contacts and photos are as you expect.

D) Set- additional options in Apple ID

  1. https://appleid.apple.com/account/manage
  2. Add 2FA
  3. Trusted devices
  4. Account recovery
  5. Legacy contact
  6. Notification email.

Let me know if you have any issues.

P.S. never share accounts,

You can add a new email to your current Apple ID so you keep your pictures and things.

I did it with ds phone not that long ago.

@Dbank

Brilliant, thank you for that. I will give that a try (but after next week because I’m away for a few days and I don’t want to risk messing up stuff on my phone that I’ll need).

I also know that we should have sorted this out much earlier - it started when DC was first started wanting the odd thing and I paid for it on the Apple ID, before family sharing was a thing. Then DH got involved and it went tits up because he’s forever tinkering with stuff and then doesn’t tell anyone.

I don’t find Apple very intuitive, and it’s not helped by having a Windows laptop, so they only ever seem to do half a job when connected - as I found out when trying to download my photos directly to the laptop.

You can indeed add another email, but it means you'll be sharing the same Apple ID, and therefore the same iCloud account, so all of your documents, passwords and photos will be merged, which generally causes issues.

For example, if the other party deletes a photo you wanted to keep, or you have different credentials for SM, and the other party logs in on your account. etc. let alone if you part ways....
