I think the reason I can't network my computers is the firewall - can anyone fix them?

it depends on what your setup is. If you have a hub, you should have a firewall on that, so you can simply disable the firewall on the other computers. if not, you'll need to configure it to allow the IP addresses of the other computers. is it windows firewall or some other one?

It's an AVG Firewall

I have a router

I thought I had changed the settings on the firewall to allow the network (but obviously not)

& now my ping thing doesn't work grr

does the router have a firewall? most do, and if it does you can simply turn off the avg one.

but you may also have a problem with permissions - you need to allow access to the folders themselves for the other computer (right click on the folder, click properties, select security and you'll see the permissions)

KatyMac · 23/03/2008 13:37

I think I have done the permissions thing - the files I want to share have a little hand under them

Don't know if the router has a firewall

well try briefly disabling the avg firewall anyway and see if the networking works - then you'll at least know for sure that is the problem.

also you can then test if the router has a firewall by going to www.madle.co.uk/ip.asp - this will show you your external IP. then try to ping that - if you can't ping it then the router has a firewall, so you don't need to turn the other one back on.

OK so that ip address pinged so I don't have a firewall on my router

The network doesn't work on one PC when AVG firewall isn't working - but it does on the other

Poop!!

you probably don't have a firewall in it then (although you might - it depends on the setup). at least you know to keep fiddling with the one computer though!

Try downloading Network Magic, (networkmagic.com) it's free to try. It will help set up your network for you and make managing it easier. Install it on each computer you wish to network and go from there.

I did & it works
