It's not a UK gold hallmark

Ok thanks @ChampagneCommunist

It's a Verity watch if that adds anything useful.

Verity is a Swiss make. I think your watch might be gold plated, but it could still be worth a bob or two, depending on the date of manufacture, and condition. I don't know if it's a shadow on the photo, but one of the links looks like the plating has come away and the base metal is showing. In the UK gold is generally hallmarked although some time older gold had the hallmark missed off to remove the duty....despite being punishable by law (the tax man likes his dues!), some jewellery makers were happy to take the risk! The duty on gold stopped in 1890, so any jewellery from then on should carry a hallmark. Imported gold was also supposed to carry a mark, but this wasn't closely adhered too!
If gold doesn't have a mark there are a couple of tests you can do, 1)gold is not magnetic, so if it's plated (depending on the base metal) and you get a magnetic reaction it's definitely not gold.
Gold never tarnishes (hence its popularity and value).
So tarnishing or magnetic it's definitely not gold.
But not having a magnetic attraction and not having any tarnish doesn't mean it is gold, it would need further testing.
Be very careful using a magnet round a working watch. Ideally keep the magnet away from the watch movement, by testing the bracelet at the end furtherest away.

I don't think the gold's coming away- here's a pic.
It's not working- might just need a battery I suppose!

Is this a clearer pic?

Can you zoom in anymore of the marks under the letters?

truetruebarneymcgrew · 14/11/2023 14:07

It's a very sweet watch, and a good make.

Thanks.
It was from rather a horrible grandma so I don't have any qualms about selling it!
If I upload a pic it never seems to be as clear on here.
And my eyes can't pick out any more detail than the actual letters.
I'll try again when I get home! Meanwhile here's an enlargement!

Looks like it might say 375 in the second block, which would be 9 carat gold.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 14/11/2023 14:43

Well rather horrible grandma has left you a rather lovely gift! I'm pretty sure it's 9ct. You want to sell it at a specialist watch auction to get best price, and you might want to put a reserve on it. I'm a bit out of the auction loop, so not sure what prices are like at the moment, but I'd suggest getting a couple of valuations on it before putting a reserve price on.

truetruebarneymcgrew · 14/11/2023 14:50

you'll get more for it in working order, looking at it, I think it might be a wind not a battery mechanism, but it's hard to tell from the photos, watches weren't my area, but I'd hazard it to be 50s. Careful not to overwind it, if it is a winder!

StopGo · 14/11/2023 15:59

W.H.W. Ld is W H Wilmot Limited of Birmingham. I think that might be a hallmark underneath.

gettingolderbutcooler · 14/11/2023 16:42

Gosh @DuckBushCityLimit @beetr00 @truetruebarneymcgrew @StopGo - you are all a hive of information!
Still- that Verity watch at auction only went for £200 so I can't retire on the earnings!
You're right though- it does say 375 under the letters!
