Hi - if you've got windows, go into explorer, go up to Tools, Folder Options, then select file types. Find the pdf association in the list and delete it. Next time you go to download a pdf it should prompt you to create a new association and you can choose adobe then, hth

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:08

Thank you, I have now tried that (Im sure I'mdoing something wrong!) but Tools doesn't give me Folder Options.

alternatively you can access the file types from control panel (if you are in classic view) click on folder options- that help?

browncat · 11/03/2008 10:15

(to check which version of windows click on your start button - it should say up the side, not very technical sorry)

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:16

ok I have got to folder options now what? Sorry

OP posts:
browncat · 11/03/2008 10:18

have you got a file types tab? Click on that then scroll down the list to find the 'pdf' in the extension column - delete it...

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:19

Oh crap I thought I had done it then but no, still crappy notebook. I should work for the government disabling enemy systems

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:28

nope I have no idea what I have done to this thing. It's dp's work laptop too. Thank you so much for trying to fix it, now I have to come up with a plan to convince him he did it

OP posts:
browncat · 11/03/2008 10:29

tell him its a virus- good luck

GeekBoy · 11/03/2008 10:31

Find a PDF, Right Click whilst holding the Shift key, and instead of the normal 'Open' option you'll get an additional 'Open With' option. Choose open with, scroll down the list to find Adobe Acrobat Reader, check the checkbox that says 'Always open with this program' (or something like that..

...all will be good.

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:37

hang on ...may take me a while

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:39

Greyriverside · 11/03/2008 10:43

www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

Download adobe ready here. Untick the "Free Google Toolbar" first.

It should sort out the filetypes for you when it installs

Greyriverside · 11/03/2008 10:48

Oops! Adobe Reader not Adobe Ready

After it installs go to Edit Menu and click preferences.
On the left side select 'Internet' and that gives you a page where you can UNTICK 'Display PDF in Browser' (a matter of opinion, but I hate viewing it in the browser)

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:51

I give up. It wont install it. Thank you all so much for your help but I fear that when it comes to computers I am beyond help

Sorry to keep replying to myself, but the direct link may be easier
ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/8.x/8.1.2/enu/AdbeRdr812_en_US.exe

Greyriverside · 11/03/2008 10:54

Yeah, the original link may fail because of security settings on the PC. The direct one will download it without asking you to install ActiveX stuff

wildwoman · 11/03/2008 10:59

Thank you for trying but I am officially giving up, I have spent over an hour faffing about trying to fix it and now have a nasty feeling that I have deleted important stuff. DP will kill me, the dds will be motherless and all because I didn't pay attention at school [back of hand to forhead in dramatic fashion] oh well, thankyou all again.

EffiePerine · 11/03/2008 11:04

if you are opening files, can you right click and then choose 'Open With' and Acrobat Reader? I have to do this to avoid crappy Windows image software

Greyriverside · 11/03/2008 11:12

Wildwoman, I doubt you've done any harm and maybe later you can say casually "you know you really ought to have the Adobe Reader on here you know" and let him do it
