Fast phone charger plugs

Is it possible to explain, in words of two syllables to a non-techy person, what a fast charger plug does that a standard three-pin plug doesn't? How does this witchcraft work?

Basic usb chargers adhere to the basic usb specifications for power delivery - designed to power peripherals rather than for charging, the power has got higher with each version of usb.

The fast chargers can increase the voltage and current by talking to the phone to work out what the safe amount to delver is.

USB 3, maximum power is 4.5W

USB-C PD is 240W

How clever!

So what happens if you plug in a device that cannot talk to the plug?

They're generally backwards compatible and charge at a lower rate.

There's loads of intelligence built into chargers these days. When they connect, they do a sort of negotiation with each other around what specifications they support and then agree the fastest.

I am going to get slated for this

Modern batteries can do about 500 full cycles (below 10% to 100% or around 4000 part cycles (50%ish to 100)

So charging your battery when its half full extends the life by quite a bit

Seperatly heat also damages batteries, and obiously charging slowly reduces heat generated in the battery

So i always slow charge, all night, every night with a thin case to let that heat out

This means my battery is charging for around 4 hours, then relaxing for 4 hours before i unplug the charger and start to use it

It also means that my battery is never ever even near low, which is a great comfort

Also make sure no apps are using your location "all the time"
