Mac users - deleting history?

Sorry if this has been asked before but is there a way I can delete items in the history list and if not how long does it keep it for?

go to histury whilst in safari go to the bottom of the list and it says clear history
You ca also do private browsing by slicking on safari next to the apple and click private browsing it will make no record of the sites you have been on
