I think my computer is dying so I am make (several) backups

I have backed up all my files & docs to a hard drive & will also back them up to BT Vault

But what about my emails & contacts & Bookmarks? I have a lot of important info here & realised that it wasn't safely stored anywhere

Good question - I'd like to know this as well!

GeekBoy · 26/02/2008 09:30

are you on XP at the moment?

What do you use for email/contacts?

Where are your bookmarks stored? IE/Firefox/Opera?

KatyMac · 26/02/2008 09:36

Firefox
Outlook Express
MS outlook

I'd like to know too.....
(i work on xp, use outlook for email, firefox for browsing.... sorry for hi-jack!)

Can you follow my thought processes -

  1. is my laptop dead?
  2. can I back it up?
  3. can I buy a new one?

If you are using internet explorer, to back up, check this guide.

If you are using firefox, check this guide

A good way to back up everything is to either:

  1. Go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, windows easy transfer wizard.
    Follow the instructions.

  2. Alternativly, Use a piece of software such as one of these.

For e-mail, if you are using outlook, it's quite complicated, but easy tranfer wizard should take care of it.

Bear in mind:
-If your computer is crashing because of old age, this is fine.
-If it's crashing because you have a virus, you will be transfering the virus to the new PC!

My computer isn't crashing - I have a loose connection where the power cable goes in & I have an estimate of £120 & one week to fix it

Also, Just found this guide for backing up outlook.

Looks quite useful, but only for outlook 07.

Ah ok. Ignore the last bit then about
"-If your computer is crashing because of old age, this is fine.
-If it's crashing because you have a virus, you will be transfering the virus to the new PC!"

Blimey - nothing like spreading your data out is there!!

Right, Firefox first as the the easiest - with Firefox open go to Bookmarks/Organise Bookmarks then choose File/Export and choose where to export them to - default is bookmarks.html

Outlook/Outlook express - easiest to use File and Settings Transfer wizard which can be found in Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/File and Settings Transfer wizard. Select your PC as the OLD PC and then follow the wizard through. It allows you to save everything in Outlook express (including contacts/account settings/email). I'm pretty sure it also does this for Outlook as well.

Personal & family on OE
Business & work on MSO

Makes sense to me

Would it be easier to wait until I have a new laptop or can I store it all on my external hard drive

yep - then you've got the most up to date emails etc - like you said - the laptop isn't dying, just the power bits!

KatyMac · 26/02/2008 19:38

I've got a man to look at it - finally
