Samsung phone locked after update

My partner updated his phone and now the screen is locked requiring at least a 4 digit code including a letter. From googling this seems a common issue. Samsung can't/won't unlock either remotely or in store even with proof of purchase and can only suggest factory reset. Partner never set a screen lock and is anxious not to lose photos etc. Any suggestions?

Ah god, as long as he knows his email address and password you can factory reset it google how to do it, you usually hold volume down or volume up when turning it on

When its reset it will require the previous email and password

I hope his photos were all backing up to google photos
