Got spam in my spam folder but the address on it is mine (as sender).

Have they managed to hack into my email account and will they get to my contacts?

Is yahoo account.

Yahoo have no address I can find to send stuff to to ask. They just say mark as spam, which it is.

TIA

This has happened to me this week, it is to me and from me.

Nothing on it just title of 74% discount or similar.

Feeling a little nervous, as also a pop up got through this week asking if I wanted to check for virus. I have all that stuff in place so a touch confused.

my computer does it all the time my security will report didnt send messages although not tried to send any when check hundreds of e mails to addresses i dont know

MrsJohnCusack · 19/02/2008 09:24

someone hacked my hotmail a few weeks back and sent some cruddy email to my entire address book - VERY embarassing as about half of the people in in would struggle to know who I am

i have changed my password to something very complicated now and ensured that I don't use it for any other sites - was lazy about that before and paid for it!

ArmadilloDaMan · 19/02/2008 09:24

sounds like the same one I got.

just said 77% discount in the title.

The pop-up for a virus if isn't your virus checker is spyware.

Use virus checker etc but it's dead easy to fake an email address is you're using open relays (or hacked machines) - basically you can just tell the mail server who you'd like the email to appear to come from and that's what will happen..

'Say hello to mail server'
HELO openrelay.mail.server

'Tell it who the email is for'
MAIL TO:[email protected]

'Tell it who the email is from'
RCPT FROM:[email protected]

'Now compose your dodgy spam email...'
DATA

Subject: "Buy viagra - you'll be harder than Chuck Norris"

The rest of your lovely spam email goes here..

.

QUIT

And that's it - you've sent a message to yourself from yourself with spam as the payload...

The only thing spammers need is your email address and an open or dodgy mail server. Getting a message from yourself doesn't necessarily mean that your account has been hacked - just that your email address is on a spammers list..

so that's how you do it geekboy.

I had something similar a few years ago with hotmail but they said it was a forged header or something so there was nowt they could do.

ArmadilloDaMan · 19/02/2008 11:00

thanks for that geekboy

Will do.

as per Geekboy... many Viruses interogate your local address book and then ue this process to send a nice email to pretty much everyone you know... also some are even worse and they open someone elses address book do this for eery entry...

Right royal pains in the ass... as a corporation we get 1.1million emails per day... we throw 64% of those in the bin at the firewall as they are spam and malicious...
