I don't like my gmail address, what can I do?

My gmail address is often misread as it has 'rn' in it and people read that as 'm'.

For this reason I'd like to change it.

I know I can't actually change it without setting up a new Google account which I don't really want to do, but is there anything else I can do that would have the same effect? For example, can I create a new gmail address that will automatically direct to the same inbox?

What do people do if they change their name? Are the only options to keep their original gmail address or create a new Google account?

I find it hard to believe she's giving the wrong email address to everyone.
Now I get ones which are actually addressed to something like [email protected] .
I thought telling the hen party organiser or some of the shops might help - nope.

I have 2 linked Gmail accounts so can switch between both in the Gmail app. That is an option without making things too complicated.

Didn't know about the dot thing! I will have to try that for discount codes!

IntentionalError · 28/02/2023 19:03

My gmail address is [email protected], and I occasionally receive emails addressed to [email protected], despite the address being typed correctly. I assume the owner of that address must also get emails intended for me.

tribpot · 28/02/2023 19:14

No, @IntentionalError that is how Gmail works. You own both addresses, and any others with dots in like first.name.last.name or f.i.r.s.t.n.a.m.e.l.a.s.t.n.a.m.e - you can give it a try. Just posting the Gmail support article again, Dots don't matter in Gmail addresses.

I had a conversation with my Dotless name sake by email about 5 years ago. They may not allow it now but we definitely have the same email bar the dot. I’ve just had my partner send one to felicitybeedle@ and it’s not come to me.

The dot thing only works for Gmail email addresses. Any other provider (Yahoo, Oulook, etc), it doesn't work for.

@whoknows1230
it is a gmail address, I said earlier in the thread but should have reiterated

Ah sorry, I missed that. How strange - it definitely works for me, I've got all sorts of variations that I use and the emails always come through,

Oh so the email my partner sent to the dotless has just come through…. But I definitely had a conversation with the woman who had felicitybeedle with no dot a few years ago. Did they delete her email I wonder?
in the meantime I’ll eat some humble pie

The ignoring dots thing definitely works on gmail. But, for the posters saying that someone else seems to have the dotless/with dot version of their own emailI, that is apparently possible in a small number of cases too. I understand that there was a glitch in this at one point with some old gmail accounts and the same address (with/without) the dots was allowed in different countries. I can’t quite remember what I was told, but it might have been something to do with when the transition was was made UK accounts being googlemail.com to gmail.com.

Your email address is not case sensitive would it help to use uppercase in yours.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 28/02/2023 19:33

I had a USA email double. She was Dobby.elk@gmail where I’m Dobbyelk@gmail.

miss getting her mail. She had a much more exciting life than me.

LOL!
Looking at the post just after yours, it looks like there was a blip at some point. At least you now know you have a huge supply of alternative email addresses should you ever need them 😃

HeresANewNameForToday · 28/02/2023 19:38

I believe the . trick works for gmail addresses but not googlemail addresses.

FixTheBone · 09/03/2023 14:32

Another mind blown.....

So glad I’m not only one with an gmail twin - mine is a lady in Michigan and I’ve had invites to church potlucks, instructions for “my” role in organising nana’s 90th birthday, more worryingly a bunch of emails regarding her son being sectioned/US equivalent - had to write back few times to say stop that.
