HP Pavilion and Gmail

My computer screen is lacking in contrast.
Text appears grey never dark or black. Is this a symptom of 'ageing' of screen? Or are there adjustments I can make?

Gmail will not accept my name/password and goes French on me and tells me phone number is impossible

May be worth checking the language setting on gmail. Here is how

With Gmail as you can’t log in are you already logged in and it’s stuck on French?
Or can’t you log in and you’re only getting the French page?
