Bought 2017 iMac from Amazon refurbished store to use as general family workhorse. Nothing major, just homework, searches, documents and streaming.

It's arrived and looks great, but I can't set it up!

It's come with wireless Apple keyboard and mouse but they aren't paired to the machine, so I'm a bit stuck!

My gut says purchase wired mouse, plug in and use that to set up - is that right?

Would I also need a wired keyboard initially too?

DS home in 90 mins and will be furious if it doesn't work!

You can use it without the keyboard or mouse.

Care to share how?

Sorry I've just realised iMac rather than MacBook. I have a Bluetooth mouse and laptop. If you go onto Bluetooth settings they should just be there to be paired. Make sure the mouse and keyboard are charged up and switched on.

Yes but I can't go into anything, because the mouse hasn't been paired

I can't click on anything or type anything because neither has been paired with the machine. Sorry, I thought I mentioned that, my bad.

Do you have a wired keyboard at home at all? You could connect that and then navigate using keyboard only to pair the apple mouse and keyboard.

RoseslnTheHospital · 29/11/2022 14:32

Make sure both mouse and keyboard have charged batteries and are turned on, disconnect everything from the iMac apart from power. Restart the machine using the physical power button. It should restart and trigger the necessary Bluetooth wizard to enable it to detect the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Normally they run you through pairing the equipment as part of the set up.

Otherwise yeah you'll need to grab a wired kit

WaveyHair · 29/11/2022 14:39

If you have a charging cable you could try connecting it to the mac itself. Also make sure they are switched on - it should just pick them up.

Tried restarting and no dice. Grabbed a v cheap keyboard and mouse from Curry's, sorted in five mins.
