Geeky stuff

My Mac PowerBook G4 is making hideous grinding/clunking/clanking noises..

I didn't know they could talk..

Has been slowing down, doing weird stuff for a while and I've been ignoring it, like I do.
It's like having a DP who snores now, I just don't hear it..
But today there's a huge amount of the spinning wheel stuff, massive delays, and ACTUAL CLANKING.. like there's someone trapped inside, rattling their chains.

Is it totally buggered?

It is more than likely to be the hard drive on its way out, says my DH. He suggests backing up important stuff.

Having said that, I use his old powerbook G4 (7 years old) and it is making very similar noises.

If you have a CD in it, it could be that (he is saying to take the edge off the bad news I think.)

Perhaps it is time for a shiny new one?

am getting better

slowly slowly

things are a lot, lot better than they were, thanks for asking

onebatmother · 24/01/2008 22:38

cappy, I'm glad, and hope it all speeds up for you.

llareggub - thank you to you and DH.. but buggeration.
Can one replace hard drives, do you know? or is it just as expensive as buying a new one.

I can't afford a new one!! Would be a disaster!

yes...you need to go to an apple store or look online. He reckons it might be £50 - £100. So maybe not the end of the world?

Hi onebatmother- my Mac did exactly the same- it was a rental from PC World and it took me EIGHT months to get a replacement.
For a good bargain try the Apple store refurbished Macs.
Word of warning. DO NOT BUY from PC World.

onebatmother · 27/01/2008 21:16

erk jeremyspants.. will defo not try PC World. I'm really hoping to get a new hardrive and do it myself... am i mad? probably. but also broke, so.. here goes!
