Supplementing MacBook storage

We are about to replace our ageing MacBook and wondered how others supplement the internal storage? The basic 2022 Pro only has 256GB internal memory and no SD card slot. DH is keen we move away from subscriptions such as Cloud to buy additional memory (which for me is an obvious option). I would only use it for basic files, emails etc (in fact I'll hang on to our 2015 machine) but he needs storage for photo editing and music. Thanks in advance

Can he buy an external hard drive?

Thanks and to be honest I have no idea so will look into that! Not quite sure how those work with Macs.

Any USB hard drive will do you, just weigh up price vs portability. What you will need to do though is format the drive for a Mac when you get it. This isn’t tough, there are lots of tutorials online and Mac’s have built in software for doing it — it’s just a gotcha if you didn’t realise you needed to.

A decent Mac compatible external storage device will cost around £70 if you do t want it to randomly fry your data.

conversely, my subscription is 79p/month.

Only thing is - Macbook Pro 2022 only has USB-C/Thunderbolt style ports so you'll either need to make sure you have one that connects that way, or a hub to connect between the two.

I find that between iCloud and OneDrive I have come nowhere near filling the storage on the base model though - and I hoard the shit out of files.

Thanks all. We decided to get the 512 model and will supplement with an external hard drive if needed (we're getting a USB C docking station)
