I am a total tech idiot and have no idea if it's possible to download films from these platforms on to a laptop or mobile phone. Can anyone help please?

They don't get saved to your phone just in the apps- but on each app there will be an option to download when you click into the movie/programme you want.

So can I download stuff in advance (to watch on a plane)? Sorry to be so stupid!

Yes, you can go into the Downloads section on each of the apps to see a list of what you've downloaded.

Just don't do it too far in advance - netflix allows unlimited downloads on I think 3 devices, but, they expire generally between 48 hours and 7 days.

disney allows unlimited downloads on up to 10 devices. and the content should play for 30 days, following which reconnecting to the internet should be enough to 'renew' the licence to play it,.
