Planning on getting a 2nd hand refurbished iPhone for 11 year old‘s birthday.

Possibilities are either a 7, an original SE or a 2020 new style SE.

I would like the phone to last 4/5 years, and upgrade for 15th/16th birthday.

Original SE is perfect size, and would only cost around £100, but I am concerned it would quickly become outdated and stop supporting apps etc.

7 is a bit bigger than ideal for fitting in blazer pocket etc. Bit more expensive, but that’s fine. Possibly similar concerns re: longevity?

SE 2020 is perfect size, should last ok, but would be about £250, so a bit more than I really want to spend on an albeit careful 11 yo.

How long, realistically, will each one last before it becomes unusable due to the system no longer updating? Is an old style SE a false economy?

You can Google the supportife for each model.

IPhone SE and iPhone 7 probably both stop getting updates this year in September when iOS 16 is released.

On past form, the new iPhone SE should be supported until Sept 2025.
