Affiliate links on websites - anyone know much about them?

I've got this vague awareness that if you have your own website you can get a bit of extra pocket money by putting links on from affiliates. Has anyone tried this? Can anyone recommend a place to find decent affiliates that will actually pay?

Yes, you're right that if you have a website you can put up links and banners to other sites.
Some pay you for each sale that results from someone clicking from your site, others will pay you for the actual clicks.
There are various sites that allow you set up such links.
One is called shareasale.com
