I was very lucky to have got an iPhone for Xmas but I am with Orange (have been for 6+ years) and am reluctant to switch networks.

Do I really have to?

Also I have 6m left on my contract with Orange so how do I go about wheedling out of that?

Any help appreciated. Really wanna get going with the iPhone but can't afford to have 2 plans running. Plus I have magic numbers with Orange which makes a big difference to my monthly bill.

I'm not a geek, but Apple have said that if you get your iPhone unlocked, then you won't be able to download future software updates. (I think). Don't know if this is true, but I'm not sure I would risk it.

If you want to keep the phone, I would put it in a drawer for six months until you can get out of your Orange contract, and swap to o2. If you really don't want to swap contracts, then I would ask the giver to take it back and give you something else.

I think the o2 contract has to be more than£30 a month, do you currently pay that much?

if you google "unlocking iPhone" there are loads of sites, but I don't know how reliable they are....

I don't know how it is in UK, but here in France iPhone's partner is Orange, and they unlock your phone for 100 euros (= 75 pounds).

I got iPhone with an Orange rechargeable phone card worth 100 euros. Called Orange client service number, told them I want iPhone unlocked, they took the 100 euros from the account of the number. Several days later, I connected iPhone to iTunes with my usual SIM card (not Orange), hit "restore" button, and the words "Your iPhone has been unlocked" appeared on the screen. I've been using it with my old SIM card (not Orange) ever since.

You have to download flash player Justine. You should be able to do this through Safari.

Iphone is right up my tree.. providing you have not updated the firmware to 1.1.3 it is pretty easy to unlock it to work on any network.... it is also kinda fun... but you do need to be a little savvy with technology...

Here is a great website to get you started

www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/

Here are some basics

  • you will need to be running v1.1.1
  • you will need to jailbreak the phone
  • from the installer there are now options to remove carrier restrictions.
  • if it all goes wrong you can just factory reset the phone and sync with itunes

I am not going to tell you how to do it as I do not want to be held responsible if (when) you have problems.. but I do know it does work on Orange!!
