In an air bnb, for 2 weeks, has WiFi but isn’t great. Dc need the internet for gaming and I’m also working. What can I get to help?? A dongle?! Is there something I can buy to stick in the router at all? Ideally something on Amazon so I can get next day delivery!

Any way to use wired connection to the router? For work, can you buy a data package and hotspot from your phone?

ThatsWhatI · 18/10/2021 21:37

We have a TP link at home to extend our WiFi and it also creates a second channel from the router

Dontmindasking · 18/10/2021 21:40

Work I have done that but to tether phone to laptop, WiFi calling has to be off and there’s no mobile signal so I need WiFi calling on to use the phone!

I thought about plugging in but only solves one problem and not the kids. My work laptop works on the WiFi but calls are hard going and we can’t all be connected at the same time!!

@ThatsWhatI does it matter what you buy?? I don’t want to waste buying the wrong thing and waiting for replacement as I’m rubbish at tech!

Get a mesh network setup. BT Whole Home WiFi is around £200. The advantage is that it doesn't want to take over the router as other mesh systems do, so it's good to install into existing settings (you can take it home afterwards). They also do a mini mesh for around £100. I think Tenda do one for about £80, but can't vouch for it myself (I'm an IT Consultant for a living). Have installed plenty of those BT systems though, never had any complaints. Which is ironic, because I despise BT. Oh, and it works on any broadband setup (Virgin etc.), doesn't need BT Broadband.

Is it wifi that is the problem or the broadband connection?

Plug your laptop direct into the router with a network cable and do a speed test with all other devices disconnected. Repeat using wifi and compare the difference.

TwoBlueFish · 18/10/2021 21:47

Is it high speed fibre broadband? Is the issue that the wifi doesn’t reach all rooms in the house or is it that it’s too slow?

If you wire your laptop into the router and run a speed check what does it say?

If it’s slow due to being a basic broadband package then there’s not much you can do with it. If the issue is it’s not teaching everywhere in the house you can buy an extender.

Dontmindasking · 18/10/2021 21:50

No it’s not that it doesn’t reach, it’s the speed/can’t all connect at the same time?

I can’t connect laptop, I only have a charger?

It sounds potentially like the Airbnb place just has a poor speed tbh. Understandably lots don’t pay for the highest download speed or the area just doesn’t support it if it’s rural. Have you spoken to the host?

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/10/2021 21:57

If the speed is the issue, any type of WiFi extender isn’t going to help - it’s just going to further spread a poor connection. It may well be that the internet connection at the Airbnb isn’t strong enough for video calls & gaming.

You can usually buy additional data from your mobile provider and connect to your phone, but you’d need a strong data connection on your phone to make that worthwhile… and realistically you probably won’t get video calls & gaming from it.

You can also buy dongle things from most mobile shops which work like small routers. You could get one that you could use, and then let the kids try and game on the airbnbs connection without you using it too, but that might not be strong enough to support gaming still - and the strength of the dongle will again depend on the mobile data signal. And it might be expensive, if you’re not willing to sign up to a 12 month contract.
