Charging a british mobile phone whilst in the US

Hi I am going to California tomorrow for a week (on my own! No kids or DH!!!). How do I charge my mobile whilst there as they have 110v and we have 240v?

I have a plug adaptor thingy that means I can plug it into the mains but as the charge is so different will it work or could it even fry my phone? I have a car charger which I hope is universal but it would be easier if I could charge the phone overnight and, cheap as petrol is there, I don't think leaving the car running is very practical or environmentally friendly!

Help!!!

Don't know about the voltage thing, I always just plug mine into the regular charger with a plug adaptor and it seems to be fine.

Whenever I've been to the US or Canada I've just taken a mains adaptor and it's been fine. Your phone won't fry, possibly just take a little longer to get a full charge.

Thank you both! The Carphone Warehouse thought it would be fine but I was sceptical

Most chargers these days support 110v-240v. It will say so on the charger. Just needs an adapter to plug in (unless its motorola then they've already given you an adapter)

I'd be surprised to find a charger that wasn't 110v-240v. Everything we use on holiday (laptop, phones, blackberry) all have chargers that take either voltage.

Yep it is triband. Off to sunny old Oakland for my sins! I used to live there so it is a chance to catch up with friends and meet an old friend's new baby, which is actually why I am going as her family are in Scotland and couldn't go. Only she had her boy three weeks early which means she needs less help and we can do more shopping!!

I am travelling light and going clothes shopping while there cos the Avenue and Lane Bryant do nice fat clothes!

If you have a car, a car charger is the most straightforward (and compact) way.

A plug adapter onto of your British plug would work too, but it is quite a bulky arrangement.

Oooh thank you for the link! Actually I will be mainly in Alameda as that is where my friend lives. It is going to be odd though going back to Oakland after 5 years in the sticks over here!
