home network for sharing files between computers

Because I?d love to tap your brains?. We have a desktop and laptop and I need to be able to be able to see the files of one from another. So? I am trying to get both on a small home network. Both are connected to a wireless modem router and happily talk to that, but I can?t seem to get them networked? Have followed the create a wireless network wizard on the PC and it seems to want me to insert a usb memory stick into the modem and there is no usb port in modem. There is a manual option but it wont let me do that something about hardware?. (the PC uses a USB Logitech wireless g thingy to pick up wirelss signal). Oddly the laptop dances through the wizard no probs (odd because both run windows XP and you would have thought the wizard would be the same?..) but then nothing happens?.. My question is this- is it even possible to run a network where both computers are wirelss or does one have to be wired? If I can set it up can anyone see an obvious school boy error in what I am trying to do or will I have to resort to getting someone out to set it up (which we really can?t afford).
cheers in advance for any suggestions (PS stupidly posted this in products first so please ignore that.....)

What do you see in My Network Places?
And have you enabled sharing on the folders you want to share on each computer?

I may be dead wrong, but AKAIK you need a switch instead of a router.

The router allows each client machine to communicate with the internet. A hub allows different computers to talk to each other as well as the internet.

Alternately you could buy some crossover cable and simply wire the two together.

It's late and I'm tired so this may unintelligible/wrong.

mmme- ok yes the instructions do say something about a hub..... i assumed this was the router...
netwrok places don't show anything (old links to uni computers only) and wiring is not poss as one is upstairs one down.... oh lord I knew this returning to Uni with an 8 month old would be a nightmare....

Your router will be fine. Most likely XP configuration.

Here is a link to how to share files/folders from Microsoft,
support.microsoft.com/kb/814003/
That was part 6, then follow part 7 that should do it for you.

i have exactly the same problem, i had given up on it - but am going to follow that link...
