Switching broadband advice required.

We're in the last couple of weeks of our broadband contract ending and, for reasons I won't bore you with, would like to switch providers.
Can we do this now and not pay early exit fees? Do they give you a few days grace or does it have to run to the last day before you can arrange a new contract with someone else?

Also, does average speed broadband, ie FFTC, require an engineer to come to the house?

Thanks, in anticipation.

Who is your current ISP?
Just looked into changing mine (Mid Jan). I'm with John Lewis who have been fine but I could get a better deal with BT. When I checked with BT they assured me that they would handle the switch-over without any loss of service (working from home so this was important).
I would notify your provider that you won't be renewing your contract and also make sure you're not on some rolling contract. As long as you go to the final day of your contract you won't be penalised for early termination.
You might want to check with your proposed provider that there's not a long waiting time.
The only problem might be is if you're with Virgin - it can take a bit longer to switch.

The average speed broadband shouldn't require an engineer visit, unless there's a connection problem at your end

Many thanks species.
I'm finding it a real pain, for some reason.
Wish it was like Gas and Electric switch where, providing you're in last 40 days, or so, of your contract, then you can move without penalty.

My experience has been emails saying that I'm going to be charged early termination, etc., but in the end the early termination costs were pretty minor. It's supposed to take 2 weeks to switch anyway, so start the switch now, if you are in the last 2 weeks.

If you are switching to BT, they have a scheme to pay early termination charges to switchers, but it is "invitation only", so talk to them first.
