For a big birthday in about a weeks time for my teen. Only just got out of him what his hearts desire would be. I haven't time to get one built or go to a specialist etc I just want to buy one - preferably a bundle with monitor etc. He plays GTA, Watchdogs and other driving games. Makes stop start animation movies, which he edits himself so need good editing capabilities. Preferably under £1000.

Grateful for any ideas. I'm feeling rather desperate and time is limited! Thanks!

Bit difficult getting one in such a short space of time but here you go.
Bear in mind that - sadly - your budget won't extend to a top end gaming rig.

for a mere £837.34 Smile
The graphics card is suitable for running most games at 1080p HD on medium settings but not at 4K but bearing in mind your budget it's not a bad compromise. You ( or your son) would probably upgrade it in a couple of years
Good combination of an 256gb SSD drive for speed and backed up with a 1TB hard for storage . Could do with an extra 8gb of ram but you can always add that later. Comes with a 24" screen plus keyboard and mouse.
Despatch on 1/2/2021 but you should check the expected delivery date (port holdups etc).
Note that it does not come with Microsoft Office but your son should be able to get a cheap educational version from his school/college.
Best of luck!

Don't bother with Microsoft Office download Libreoffice.

What’s he using now for these stop/start movies ?

HmmSureJan · 31/01/2021 09:18

@tanstaafl he just uses an iPad with an editing app but he's really into it and that's why I wanted to get him a better set up to do it on.

Thanks so much for suggestions. I've managed to get out of him that he'd prefer a lap top so he can take it to college/friends so now I am looking at that - possibly easier to get a decent one? Any thoughts on this? He doesn't suspect at all that he's getting a gift like this as he knows money is tight but I have been saving just for this.

I’ve bought lots of pc components from Scan over the years, to build up PCs.

I’ve never bought a ready made pc or , in this case , laptop from them, but I have no reason to doubt their credentials.

Before you buy a windows machine, is the software he uses to create animations available for windows10 ?

You'll get a lot more for your money with a desktop, both in the short term, but importantly in the long-term as well by means of being able to easily upgrade components.

It's probably the worst time in history to buy a gaming PC right now as the graphics card prices are through the roof, you may be better spending £700 now on something that has plenty of storage, and upgrade potential with a fairly week graphics card (or even integrated graphics) and saving the £300 for when graphics card prices come down.
