Probs with Norton 2008 and freezing

I've upgraded to the latest version of Norton Protection Centre and I've not found it as satisfactory as the 2007 version. The old version used to clear out almost all my nasty spammity-spam - I had maybe one message every two months. With the 2008 version I get about 10-15 a day. Some of them are marked [SPAM], some not. There doesn't seem to be any way of customising the email scanning facility. The window is pretty useless.

Secondly, when doing a Full System Scan I always seem to get a seize-up after scanning about 5000-odd files (just a few minutes into the the scan). This has happened 3 times now.

I've been getting freezes a lot on the screen in the past few weeks and have found CTRL-ALt-DEL and ESC not to work, and in the end a "cold boot" (switching off, in English) is the only thing that has brought my PC back to me. (Don't know if it is related to Norton - sometimes it has happened just when using Firefox.)

I've had a quick scan of the PC Hell site but there doesn't seem to be anything suggested that I haven't tried.

If anyone can cast any light I'd be most grateful.

Yes that is it exactly. I think there is a savepoint every time you boot.

My experience is that, although the computer goes back in time, I seem to age more quickly when using it. It goes back a week in time, I get a week older, so the universe remains in balance. Clever isn't it?

hmm I'm pleased it's worked for you but now I guess I'm going to have to take it off here arrghhh because the computer.....is..............sooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.......slow...since Norton 2008 has been on here (and the freezing still happens and the slow startup).

Maybe I'll give them a ring first.

Since I got rid of Norton, I've found bits of it popping up again. I think this is not unrelated to the fact that I had to do a System Restore recently. So I have Avira Anti-Vir as my antivrus, running with ZoneAlarm firewall - but odd bits of Norton and its LiveUpdate occasionally telling me it wants to do stuff.

I know it is Very Bad to have two of Auntie Vera's products running alongside each other. I've tried repeatedly to remove Norton via Add/remove Programs but it's not having it - just keep getting a message saying it's not recognised and needs to be verified as a patch. Any ideas?

Thanks - will give it a go.

And if the blowtorch doesn't work I'll try the link!

I have heard before about that problem with Norton.

I cleared Norton completely in one go - the hard disk on our laptop had to be replaced! We are now using AVG and ZoneAlarm.

Update from my clever IT bod - I've just had a new PC with Vista business on and he has now chosen to install AVG & Spybot instead of ZA and lavasoft.

He also (hated to admit it) said that the new version of Windows Firewall is quite good
