Hi there

Looking for any advice for photo storage solution please. I’m not very technical but will have a go at explaining! I currently have an iPhone 7, only had it a few months. When I set it up all my photos from my last phone ported across to my new phone so I currently have about 4500 Shock hence taking up a lot of storage on my phone. Is there any way I can transfer the photos from my phone directly to an external hard drive without having to put them on my laptop first? The reason being I already have quite a bit on my laptop and also it will take ages to download them all. I am currently in the process of actually printing out my photos-not all of them as it will cost a fortune- but I’d like as many as I can because I miss actually having physical photos to look at, just doesn’t seem right having them all stored on gadgets.... but I’m still working on photos from my previous phone! Taking me ages as I like to write on the back who is on the photo, the location and the date the photo was taken 😅

Someone suggested a seagate external hard drive but I think you have to download onto a laptop first?

Many thanks for any suggestions 😊

Josie x

There is an app called Gemini that allows you to go through photos that are similar, blurred, irrelevant choosing the best option very quickly. I went from 8000 to 4000 photos in my phone in 4 hours.

I have now reduced to 2-3000 because honestly, when are you going to have time to enjoy 4000 photos especially if they are put away in an external drive you never use?

Ps. I upload my best photos in Instagram and Facebook and every few years I order a print out from “my social book”, much quicker and cheaper than printing the photos yourself.

Are you using iCloud at all, though for that amount it would cost you 79p a month, then you can just store them on there and download them to print.

SkeletorAttack · 30/12/2020 06:41

I recommend the Google photos app, which syncs with your camera to provide another backup of your photos (super easy to use). You can then delete the photos from your phone, to create more storage space.

ivfbeenbusy · 30/12/2020 07:04

Google photos is a good one as it deletes it from your iPhone once it's stored in there

Personally I prefer Dropbox - photos synced to Dropbox account and I make sure it's regularly synced but to use Photobox/Boots photos to print them into photo books and it's easy to upload them using Dropbox

@KarmaNoMore thank you. I’ll check the app out, problem is I have so little storage I’m not sure I’ll be able to download it! I’ve thought about the Facebook social books on and off for a few years to be honest. It’s nice to hear you think they are good value for money. Can you edit the books and take out anything you don’t want? Are the comments put into the book? Thanks again. 😊

@TheAlphaandtheOmega thank you. Yes I pay 0.79 per month and they go to the cloud but I’m not sure how the cloud works or how to get them off the cloud! 😅🤣🙄

Have you got Optimise iPhone storage ticked in photos so they don't take up so much room.

I thought that you just clicked on a photo on your phone and then printed it, I have never done this though as I rarely print photos and would use my iMac instead. Could you log into iCloud on your laptop and get them from there

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 01/01/2021 09:46

I have just looked and I have about 2300 photos and 250 videos and it is using just under 1gb of space on my iPhone with the optimise photos ticked.
