My Norton subscription ends tomorrow and my computer is sooooo slow

I have read that Norton really slows down the computer. Does anyone know if this is correct? I was looking at free versions of AVG and K9. If I get these instead of renewing Norton do they cover everything or will I need a seperate firewall, anti spam, anti spyware etc. I'm not geeky at all so please help

I just replaced the 30 day trial of Norton with AVG on our new Vista pc - speed is massively improved. I use AVG , Zone alarm firewall & Adaware anti spyware - all free.
This site & the magazine is very good for non-geeky computer users.

THat is correct. Norton is a pile of doggy doo.

It is WAY behind the competition these days. What rustybear uses is fab. We have these too.

Thanks Rusty. What do you do about parental control? With adaware, do you have to do it manually each time or can it scan automatically? I will take a look at that website later. I'm just being lazy because my Norton will be gone in the morning and I wanted to get it sorted tonight

Yes, we've just switched from Norton to AVG and noticed an improvement. We use spybot and adware too.

My DC's are 19 & 17, so don't really have parental control issues... when they were younger, I just made sure I was around when they were on the internet.
The free version of Adaware does have to be run manually - there may be other free programs that can be scheduled.

Depends which version of norton you had - you might want some kind of spam filter, but tbh I've found very little spam gets through Hotmail these days (or maybe it's just that I'm careful where I put my email address)

AVG AntiSpyware will allow scheduled scans, in the trial version (at least mine does, though it is still in trial mode, not sure if it will once trial expires).
If you find that you like the AVG products, could be worth getting their Internet Secruity Pack (which combines AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, AntiSpan and a Firewall)

Thus could get that, plus K9.

I have AdAware SE personal btw - I think AdAware 2007 may allow scheduling, but I've read reviews which have a few reservations about it, so I'm sticking with what I've got for the moment.
I don't use outlook at home (which may be another reason I don't get so much spam. We have outlook web access at work, but we have pretty effective spam filters provided by the LA (I work at a school)

K9 is a spam filtering program that learns what to filter - the one our local authority uses is based on this principle, but I think it's been modified in various ways. It certainly drastically cut down on spam when they introduced it.
