Instagram privacy settings

I've got an Instagram account I've set up for a sideline business which I don't necessarily want friends and colleagues to follow. Today I've had new follows from two people in my contacts list. My settings aren't syncing my contacts and I'm at a loss to know how this happened. And my son said today he had a notification from Instagram that his contact 'mum' was on Instagram and inviting him to connect. This is what must have happened with my new followers but I don't want this to happen. Any ideas what I can do?!

Put your account on private so you can moderate who follows you.

Hi @applepineapple I've done that now, but what I'm concerned about is how these new followers found me. I'm not connected on Instagram to anyone they will know or follow; also how my son received a message telling him I was on Instagram when my contact syncing was off. The 'recommend similar accounts' option is also off on my account so I shouldn't be suggested as an account.
