I need a newer phone.

I currently have a Samsung Galaxy Y. Size 5.5cmx10cm.
Currently used for:

  • texting
  • talking
  • photos of things in shops

I'd like to step closer to the 21st century. According to my friends I need to be able to whatsapp and listen to podcasts.
Ideally I'd like to use those QR codes in café Nero & have the NHS test & trace app.
I probably should have other apps too, I guess.

So far so easy.

I want it to be small Small enough to fit in my front jeans pocket.

I'd prefer android, and don't want to spend silly money.

Any good suggestions?

Not many really small phones out there. Anything less than a 5 inch screen will really limit your choice.

I think you'll struggle to be honest. For the QR test and trace crap you need I believe an iPhone 6 or higher.

Get a small cross body bag to put the phone in?

What are you photographing in shops?! If you could lose the camera function you could get an old Nokia but still no QR function

I have a Samsung j5. It fits in the front pocket of my Jean's, has a QR reader and I've downloaded the Scottish test and protect app.

I have a Huiwei honor lite which does all of that.

Google Pixel. Smaller, takes fantastic photos, scans QR codes. It also has quite a bit of clever stuff like Google translate built in.

You absolutely don't need an iPhone to do track and trace and such.

I know you don’t want Apple but my old SE is small but perfectly formed and can have all the latest apps etc (32gb).

Honor 10 (cheap - for a phone - at £120), v good camera. Mine has lasted way longer than any of my previous Apple or Android phones.

It doesn't have a QR scanner built in but I use a QR scanner app on the phone instead

Iv just got a Huawei P30 Lite new edition, it's android, iv got WhatsApp, covid track and trace etc.
It's a really good phone with a fab camera, Google the reviews, I got it from EE £23 a month, 4 gb data and unlimited texts and calls.
I'd highly recommend it

@helpfulperson J5 looks eminently suitable. Thank you. That's my Christmas present sorted.

(And thank you to all others for suggestions too.)

( @AriettyHomily In shops I photo things to show other family members, e.g. I might photo a T-shirt I think DD would like, or boxes of chocolates that I might want DH to buy me for my birthday)

We decided not to wait. J5 received and working. And not ginormous.
Loved being able to listen to a couple of podcasts today whilst sat in the middle of nowhere for an hour rather than having to listen to the news.
