How do you unfollow people on Instagram?

When I joined Instagram a year ago I followed alot of celebrities/tv personalities for the novelty of it, but would now like to whittle my feed down to just a few people who I am really interested in.

Today I have tried to cull my list by Unfollowing, firstly I went into my Following list and unfollowed each person individually- but later saw that these people's content was still showing in my feed throughout the day - so now I have been trying to unfollow as each persons post appears on my timeline. It still isn't working even though both ways shows the Following change to Follow at the time of me unfollowing them.

Can anyone advise me about what I am doing wrong please?

Hmm i think what you've done should have worked.
You can click on each profile, click 'following' tab under their bio - that gives you options and one is unfollow. This always works for me.

Go to the persons page and you’ll see ‘following’, ‘message’ and maybe ‘contact’. Click on ‘following’ and you’ll get the option to unfollow.

Thank you both so much for replying, I have actually done both the things you said but the people keep coming back! This morning I was following 207 people, I unfollowed so many then it showed I was down to following only 103 people. I have just checked my profile and it is showing me back to following 207 again.
