Can any wise MNers explain what is going on here ,
I am using a HP laptop with Chrome,
At first I though it was a issue with MN but it has started happening on other sites to a lesser extent .
As you can see sometimes full words are missing , or just a few letters or even just parts of letters ,
There is no pattern to it happening , I can be half way through reading a post and it will suddenly change without me touching anything.
The only way to get the page to display properly is to highlight it all ( as though I am going to C&P it ) or refresh the page , which is a bugger if I am half way through writing something.

There is no chance of anyone else tampering with the laptop at any time .
Can anyone explain how to fix the issue ( in very simple terms please )

Very strange.
Is it a Chromebook or a Windows laptop with Chrome as the browser?
You could try a different browser (Edge for Windows, or Firefox for Chromebook just to see if that makes a difference.
Try clearing the cache in Chrome and disabling hardware acceleration.

AlCalavicci · 13/09/2020 12:47

It windows with chrome browser , I do keep getting pop ups saying I should switch to Bing , but I am not a fan of it .
I have cleared the cache but what is this mythical Hardware Acceleration you speak of ? Confused

Ha.
I'm assuming you're using Windows 10
Open Chrome browser and find the 3 vertical dots top right of screen. Left click and choose SETTINGS near the bottom.
From menu on left choose ADVANCED then SYSTEM and you will see Hardware Acceleration second from the top.
Alternatively under SETTINGS there is a RESET browser option which does what it says on the tin.

I'm assuming you're using Windows 10 so the EDGE browser should be an option and strangely enough the latest version uses the Google search engine instead of Bing.

AlCalavicci · 13/09/2020 20:03

Yes I am using windows 10 , ok I will give that a go , thank you.

I will have a look at edge once I have tried The Acceleration drive thing ( straight out of sic-fi that is Grin )

PHOOY !

I managed to get it display for about 10 seconds and found the Acceleration setting , it was turned on , is this correct ?
I have set it to check for harmful software too but I dontvthinkbthere will be any. ( I hope )
There is also a reset and clean up option, I will give that ago if nothing else works .

AlCalavicci · 14/09/2020 17:21

OP posts:
Mutunus · 14/09/2020 19:59

Have you tried the Edge browser?

Mutunus · 14/09/2020 20:01

Posted too soon.
Try Edge. If that works Ok then you can start to narrow the fault down to see if it's just Chrome.

AlCalavicci · 15/09/2020 04:29

Morning ,
No not yet , I will try this evening. thanks

After a bit of Googling I've found there can be a problem in Chrome with certain fonts.
Click SETTINGS again, scroll down to APPEARANCE and select CUSTOMIZE FONTS.
The four options STANDARD, SERIF, SANS SERIF, and FIXED WIDTH on my machine are set to Times New Roman, Aerial, and Consolas.
See my screen shot.

AlCalavicci · 17/09/2020 22:16

@Mutunus thank you for all your advice with this but I have tried changing font , using edge so slow restarting , allowing the battery drain , threatening it with a hammer and a hot soapy wash ( My DMs cure for most things ) but bugger all has made any difference.

If I can I will take it to a shop to see if they can fix it but it looks like i may be buying a new one Sad

OP posts:
Mutunus · 18/09/2020 02:13

Ah, but did you switch it off and back Smile
Final thoughts; Assuming everything else is working and it's only chrome at fault, then you really shouldn't need to buy a new machine.
You could always try Firefox instead of Chrome.
Best of luck and sorry I couldn't fix it.

Mutunus · 18/09/2020 02:14

back on

AlCalavicci · 18/09/2020 05:59

Morning ,
I wasn't clear when I tried Edge it was slow but I still had the same issue , I will try fire fox as well though.
You have been a great help as I wouldn't of know where to start so thank you Smile

Is it on all web pages or is it just when you type? I'm thinking that it might be a problem with the keyboard. Do you have a spare keyboard to try?

AlCalavicci · 18/09/2020 18:15

Hi @sashh its across all forms that I interact with , so FB , on line shopping etc .
I can type with no issues sometimes but then it will disintegrate, if you look closely it not always whole letters that disappear some times it's just the top of random letters then when highlighted or on MN chance threads they reappear and vanish again without me touching anything.

I use a laptop do no chance changing the keyboard unfortunately.

OP posts:
Mutunus · 19/09/2020 00:13

And if the machine works fine for word processing etc then it's not the laptop at fault. You can plug a usb keyboard into the laptop to confirm.

sashh · 19/09/2020 08:46

You can use a seperate keyboard with a USB as @Mutunus said, you can also use a second monitor to see if it works on that.

Do you have someone local with a PC? You could ask to try their keyboard and or monitor.

I can get a virtual computer wizz kid to the cafe but it will only be a virtual repair.

AlCalavicci · 19/09/2020 23:04

Unfoutumatly I do not have a second keyboard or monitor to teast things , I think the keyboard is ok , the letters that I hit get tyoed but then disappear , or other peoples post disappear in parts , I has started doing it more on other sites too now , including Tesco and asda .
Oddly the screen is fine while I am watching videos / bbc iplayer / you tube etc but it may be that the fast moving pics mean my eyss dont have time to register the blank spots,

The really annoying this is that it comes and goes without me actually doing anything ( so far 3x while writing this ) and it is not in the same place so it is not damage to that bit of screen ( 4X) , I have actually found that if I dont look at what I am typing on the screen it is easier ti keep going and hope that it will all look ok when I post it ( thank god for the preview option) but it is very annoying (5x grrr) .

I think I will have to get it to a shop before I launch it through the window !

Might be a graphics driver bug. If it's a cheap laptop it'll be Intel or AMD graphics matching the processor. (An expensive laptop might have an nVidia graphics chip).

Download the latest drivers from Intel or AMD website, on another PC and put on a USB stick if needed, and install them.

AlCalavicci · 19/09/2020 23:39

@safariboot
TBH I have no idea what graphics it has installed , Is there any way I can find out ? it isnt a particularly expensive laptop , HP (Note book i think ) but in tec terms it is old , I think its about 5 years old now , maybe a bit less.
