Choosing a metal detector- what to look for?

DH want to get a metal detector, but never used one or has any experience. What keys things should we look for? Any brands to avoid? Any help appreciated.

I would recommend Garrett Ace 250 is good for beginners, easy to use and fairly inexpensive. I've used it for years and found all sorts, including silver coins
